Road Trip - Day 3 (The Official Run and Mixed Feelings)

Today was the actual official event of the Solstice/Sky weekend, Driving "The Tail of the Dragon". I'll get to that in a minute, but first I want to talk a little bit about my mixed feelings today!

FC showed a photo of me washing my car yesterday, getting it ready for today's event, but the photo didn't clearly show the shirt I was wearing. Here's a pictue of both the front and the back of that shirt.

My mixed feelings are that I'm excited about this weekend's event, but at the time both FC and I were posting last night my son was boarding a plane for his second tour of duty in the desert. He is currently answering the call of duty, and for that I am very proud! Unless you are a parent of a child that is actively serving I doubt that you can understand completely the feelings that I am currently experiencing. I'm not going to dwell on that to all of you right now, but I at least needed to get this off my chest. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with this conflict, because no matter which conflict there is controversy will always surround it. However, you do need to understand that until there are no more differences of opinion, politics, religion, or what ever any two humans of different beliefs can possibly argue about, there will always be a need for someone to try to keep the peace, and protect those who cannot protect themselves. I'll leave you with this thought, that was provided by one of the nice folks that we've met this weekend: " Thank God we have people like your son who are willing to make that sacrifice for the rest of us"! I just want him to do a good job and return home safely!

Thanks for bearing with me, now let's get back to the event of the day. I'm going to be brief, and just share a few of the phots of the day with caption, and give more details in the next few days (along with more photos).

Here's the map of the route we took

Lining up getting ready to go. At this point only about half of the group was here.

More folks joined the group. Lightin, don't you think my baby could use this upgrade?

Out ont he road! As the saying goes "If you're not the lead dog, the view is always the same"!

Or is it?!

To be continued............

T&L,
Please let your son know he has my deep and sincere appreciation for his service and sacrifice. I wish more Americans would remember how they felt on Sept. 11, 2001. I will never forget ...
I agree with you and the person you met on your trip, there will ALWAYS be a need for those like your son. To that end, I offer the following quote, which is much more eloquent and succinct than any I could ever provide. I first saw it many years ago engraved on a plaque given to me by an old friend who flew countless sorties as an Air Force B-52 pilot in Vietnam.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight; nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety; is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

paraphrase of “The Contest In America”- Dissertations and Discussions, by John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), son of English philosopher James Mill
